My 2002 GMC Sonoma Crew Cab has a clanking sound while driving and takes a jolt when started.

When I was driving down the highway the other night, I heard a clanking sound.  It is coming from the left front and has no speed or turn generally associated with it.

It does sound like a U-joint going bad, but I have never had a CV joint go bad to compare this to.

Maybe separately, yet possibly related, most of the time when I start my truck when it has not been running, it rocks forward as if in gear and I put it in park at the same time.

It is an automatic and in park.

I thought it was the torque of a sideways mounted engine, but that is not the case.

Any body have anything similar?
